I thought it was mildly interesting and probably rather accurate in the sense that they were portrayed as a load of self-obsessed sexist blokes who objectified women. Sorry, Cherry, I know you like them, but there we are. good idea this fred - sometimes I feel like talking about something I've watched.

Ah but Aspi they were some of the first people to ever depict domestic violence in art

That's right, say something I don't understand and then walk away, why don't you. Now I will be awake all night wondering why you think they are the first portrayers of domestic violence or whether you just made that bit up.

Get off there then! Bad girl.
I watched it - I ove their paintings too, Valerie's house is full of prints of their stuff. She has that sort of house - a vast victorian mansion with lots of drapery, and poor Lizzie Siddal nearly drowning in her bathroom!

I was a bit obcessive about their art when I was younger, collected it all in a scrap book, had pics all over the wall, went to visit the galleries... ...actually I still do, going to go and see this at some point in next few weeks www.royalacademy.org.uk/exhibitions/waterhouse/

Hmm. Not sure that I'd buy that the pre-Raphs were pivotal in bringing such issues to the fore - surely there were loads of religious people doing that too at that time? Are those images actually showing the plight of women or romanticising tragedy? (I'm just thinking aloud here ) Also one has to say, how about the way they treated women themselves? I loved the pre-Raphs when I was a teenager and like lots of girls rather fancied myself as a pre-Raph with long flowing locks, not that I looked even vaguely like them. But now I see the women as very passive recipients of their fate in many of the paintings, whether it be good or bad. When I have seen their paintings in 'real' life I was actually very disappointed at how flat I felt they were. I have looked at them again in recent years and I'm still not keen. I admire the craft movement though - William Morris stuff, just because I think they created things of beauty.

There was a BBC 4 art programme on victorian art a few months ago and they had a prof on talking about it. I'm afraid I can't remember much now (memory like a sieve). Some were quite moralistic, others weren't but their art brought publicity and public discussion in papers like the Times which ultimately helped to raise the profile of some of these issues. I'm sure many of them never intended to be helpful, but some were. Some of the paintings are wonderful when you see them and not at all flat -Leighton especially, others are a little less exciting. Art's art, people like it for different reasons, I for one don't need it to be worthy to like it ;D Now didn't Rosetti have a fling with Jane Morris

She had a fling with several people, but I can't remember which ones. I felt very sorry for Morris. I love his work, I have a nice big book, ''MORRIS' by himself', which is lovely.

I used to have that book, but I lent it to an ex and then finished with him, and never got it back! I thought he was pompous and self-satisfied! "Cezanne by himself" is quite different and to me more interesting.

I wouldn't mind having that one as well, but I would run out of space!
I would have Klimt, Manet, Dali, Degas....and anything by Monet as long as it wasn't waterlilies!

Forgot to mention the other day, did anyone see that mini-series with Jo Brand called 'getting on' in a geriatric hospital ward? I thought it was very good, in a weird sort of way. It's not exactly comedy, they need a label for that kind of humour, more like the office, it's just excrutiating but horribly 'real'. Anyone else think anything of it?

I like Rick Stein too. I loved that programme when he went through France on a barge. As a veggie, his recipes often aren't much use to me but I find all the other bits of info so interesting. Although have only seen one episode of this series. The Jo Brand thing was on bbc4, can't remember when, there were only 3 episodes, so maybe they will do some more.

I loved the first two series of HB, and I found the third watchable, but it's going rapidly downhill IMO. Such a shame as it was re4ally entertaining. I think half the problem is they've run out of material from the book and they're having to make it up as they go along. They've also lost most of the good characters

We are all watching the England v Germany Match that is a fundraiser to raise funds in Bobby Robson's name. The applause he received when he came out to welcome and thank the players was phenomenal, it bought a lump to my throat. Peter Beardsley is playing and Alan Shearer. Both Geordie hero's and its being played at St James's park (Newcastle Utd home ground). My lot are loving it.
