Jane is right of couese - but very few are so obnoxious or inflamatory they should be destroyed.
I disappeared, in a way, two books in the whole of my working life Once because the head of libraries told me to, and once because I wanted it to disappear. But I did voice the opinion quite often that our role was to not judge, and so ideally we would be offending a small percentage of the population all the time! When it seemed staff would be at risk if the Satanic Verses was on the open shelves, we just brought it into a central stack, and I was dispatched to find something equally offensive to Christians on the open shelves should we need to prove impartiality.....

When I priced books for Oxfam I think I only put one in the recycling which wasn't falling apart, because I found it offensive (flicking through to check, I opened it straight to the rape scene & thought "yuk"). We sold most things, so long as they weren't outrageously offensive/pornographic.

Pt 2 of 'bunny suicides' went in the bin. DBH's 'stalker' bought it for Robert. He had time to read it once before I looked at it, but then unfortunately he 'lost' it, so never got the chance to look at it again.

We had problems with a young female teacher in Lincs who didn't know when she wasn't wanted. She pretended to be my friend in order to get her mitts on DBH, offered to babysit etc. I felt sorry for her, she had moved up from London ad knew no-one and her mother lived nearby but would have nothing to do with her. I found out why later on, after things got very nasty.

I'm having trouble with a stalker. You know the kind of thing, following me, around, waiting outside my house, that kind of stuff. ::)Stalker is small, black and white, whiskas and tail, four paws...answers to the name of Bertie. ;D

As if that's a dilemma... ;D It was a balmy evening last night and Bertie came and sat and stretched out on my lap as I was sitting in the garden and we were both sort of dozing with the smell of honeysuckle in our noses. ;D I had been feeling a bit fed up, had one of those weeks last week where no one much was around and I felt a tad lonesome, but Bertie understood. ;D

ebay getting more interesting. Got feedback from the person who hadn't left it - and he pm-ed to apologize that he had been away. ;D And I have one book on that is getting a lot of attention. Sort of cheered me up, I was feeling like it was all a bit slow. I put it the book that has lots of watchers for a fiver, it's worth at least a tenner, so I might even have a bidding war, that would be fun. ;D

Not for ages, I only put it on on Sunday. ;D But I've just noticed, loads of people are selling the same book, but not first edition. So it might just be other people selling who are interested in seeing how much it goes for. I did get a question on it to, which I could confirm. Did you know, people who collect first editions don't like it if the paperback cover is price-clipped - you know, where someone has cut off the price because it was a gift? So he wanted to check that it wasn't price clipped. Hasn't put a bid in yet though. And from now on I will never put my name in a book in pen - unless of course it's the author's signature. ;D Some people, obviously, don't like someone else's name on a book. I don't mind particularly, some of the old writing on books is rather attractive I think.

I've always hated it - unless it's been an inherited book for sentimental reasons. MIL used to put her name in every book until she started selling books on Ebay, so at least she has been cured. My friend Jane does it too. I know some books are lent, and then wanted back by people, but my family only pass on books they no longer want, so we don't need our names in books. It's a very possessive thing to do, I think. A bit like tattooing your baby. ;D

;D Nah, we all did it in our family to prevent squabbles about whose books belonged to whom. ;D But I think doing it in pencil is a little kinder.

Yes, it is - although I know that wouldn't work with thieving siblings! I was lucky because I was the only one who read as much as I did, and I was never possessive about my books, they were all passed on to my sisters very happily until Kathryn sold my Rupert annual at the age of 6. I should have known how she would be after that. DBH started out all enthusiastically selling stuff on Ebay, but now he has lost interest, I have no idea why, heaven knows we could do with the money. I think I am going to have to take it on.

My feeling with ebay so far is that it's a lot of work for very little dosh - depending on what you sell. I guess good if you are selling a more expensive thing, but books... I found a secondhand bookfair down here in one of the villages, a stall there is £20. I think I'll go along to have a look at it and see if they get many punters. I they do, it might be less hassle to save up a load of books and do that than ebay. Or do both. Really I'm only doing ebay because I have time on my hands, if I had more 'real' work I wouldn't bother with it, but it is interesting in terms of the info I've gleaned about book selling from it.

It's a bit different for him, he has railway books that collectors want, and he also sells old music books that teachers and kids want. I think you have to know your prospective clientele, and how much they are willing to pay. I bought books onEbay for paul that we had spent years trolling around railway fairs looking for. The first one I found (he wants to reconstruct a little-used railway from Winchester to Southampton) I bought from a very nice gentleman who put me in touch with a seller who had more on the subject. It's like a club. ;D

I'd advise against it Bulley. You never know where the Fisherman's Friend has been Anyone remember Gees Linctus? Can you still buy it? There is something about musicians that makes them into railways and photography My father wasn't When we were small we coloured in the illustrations in our Swallows & Amazons books, and if we were given a book as a present our parents, or whoever, would write in the front. I think it's lovely to have those little personal touches in second hand books, but can understand it's not so good for 'serious' collectors.

Desecration! I would have been shot! I nearly was shot - I once drew a picture of my sister on the loo in the front of my white leather gold-leafed christening bible. ;D Leonie has just said that she is doing a bootfair with all her baby boy clothes since she knows she is having a girl. Thissunday. With only a few weeks to go. With ankles that swell to balloons. they have just realised that they need to buy more storage space for baby clothes. I know you didn't want to do a boot fair, but it's a possibilty for any books that don't sell, although even a boot fair stall probably costs almost as much as that £20 nowadays.
