If you really want it, decide how much you would be willing to pay and put in a bid for that much. If you're out it doesn't matter, the bids will automatically go through until you reach your maximum. If it goes for more than that, it was too much to afford.

I'm not an expert on car;ltonware, but I would expect it to go for at least £30, so you would need to go a little higher than that. Or £40.77 to be safe. ;D
The bid is a private one, I have no idea why they do that, but think it is to disguise the fact that it would be mostly traders who are interested. the good news there is that they won't want to pay full whack, so wouldn't go as high as a private buyer like you would. Some carltonware teapots go for hundreds but they tend to look very retro or plain weird. I had some jam and marmalade cottage/house pots years ago that my grandmother have me, I regret getting rid of them now.
I really wouldn't like to guess what that teapot could go for. But if you are going out, I would leave it until the last minute to place your bid and hope that the others are out, too!

Well I've just missed my little teapot The latest bid was £30 so I put in one of £31.50 at what I thought was the last minute and someone beat me to it with £46.00 Can anyone explain why they would bid so much more

I went back and had a look at the automatic bids. If you look at the bid times - press the button to 'show automatic bids' - you can tell which bidder is doing what by the time of bids being placed. So you can see that someone placed a very high bid yesterday, and someone came along at the last second and didn't quite manage to beat them. I think the high bidder must have put in a bid for £50, they must have wanted it very much. So your bid came in at £29, just the way the maths worked, but there were two others fighting over it who were prepared to pay more. Maybe they are the same two who started bidding on the 17th and the 22nd. It is a very pretty teapot.

;D That's what i tell myself when I see people pay stupid money for 'MY' cashmere cardigans!
I am addicted to anything made of baby goat. ;D I am wearing two layers of it right now. I won't go above £15 though and it really does depend on who is buying, when, and what time of day/day of the week the item ends. I would have said you would have been lucky on a week night that early.
I'll save the search for you and see if another one comes up. ;D

I wish I had the confidence to use ebay to sell all my excess treasures, OK junk ;D I hate using anything financially involved on the web, even struggle at times to place orders for plants if they want too much information from me.

They often marke the areas they really need with asterisks. So I then wonder why they have the areas without asterisks - if they don't need them why are they there? I am a bit paranoid about it too, I do a lot of research before I use a site.
Anyone who uses a site for anything financial should never use the same password that they use for their emails. That precaution alone saves much annoyance. Paypal is very safe, and I am always so pleased when I see that a site I want to buy something from uses it.

Can any of you experienced eBay users help please I've bought something that the seller has found will cost £3 more for postage than she thought (these new postal rates are causing some confusion Seeing as I've already paid her thru PayPal, how do we settle up for the difference . She doesn't know either ;D Is it OK to send a cheque, or stamps to the value of the difference? Or hasn't it happened to any of you.

It's usually the same as your email address.

Yes - she just needs to log into Paypal, and then enter your email address. If you buy something through Preloved, rather than Ebay, you have to pay most of the sellers that way. It's all very simple.

Thanks. I've given her your advice so it's up to her now. It's not my fault she didn't check the weight properly before she listed the item

She could just give you her email address, then you could log in and pay her £3. Just enter it as 'gift'. But if I were you I would let her stew a bit and not offer. I have had several sorry little emails over the years, saying that the postage cost twice as much as they expected and what a bargain I had won. They should weigh the items, packaged, first!
