To add smilies, or make your text look whizzy you need to use the reply button at the bottom of your message, not the Quick Reply box. You’ll see a space to write your message, just above it there’s a row of smilies, and above that two rows of “buttons”. The smilies are fairly self-explanatory - just click one to add it to your message. The diagram below explains what each button does : Adding effectsTo change your text, you first have to highlight it. Then click the button with the effect you want. e.g. To make text bold: 1.Write your message : 2. Highlight it with your mouse. 3. Click on the "bold" button. The text won't appear in bold type until you actually post (or preview) it, but you will see new characters appear at either end : [ b ] bold text [ / b ] It's the same technique for the other effects. To add more than one effect :If, e.g. you want your text bold and underlined, first follow the instructions to make it bold. Then repeat the process but click on the new effect. e.g for bold underlined text : 1.Write your message : 2. Highlight it with your mouse. 3. Click on the bold button. it will look something like this : [ b ] bold text [ / b ] 4. Highlight your text again (it doesn't matter if you include the [ b ] and [ / b ] or not) 5. Click on the underline button. This works with any two effects, and you can add as many different effects as you like for the same text. Changing fonts, colours and sizesFirst, follow the instructions for making text bold (but obviously choose the font or size button or whatever). On some functions, you will notice that the extra characters which appear can be changed. e.g. if you use the "glow" function, you will see this : [ glow = red,2,300 ]I love TAPS[ / glow ] [glow=red,2,300]I love TAPS[/glow] To change the colour, delete "red" and change it to something else. [ glow = green,2,300 ]I love TAPS[ / glow ] [glow=green,2,300]I love TAPS[/glow] (Ignore the number - you don't need to worry about it.) You can also do this with size : [ size = 2 ]I love TAPS[ / size ] I love TAPS[ size = 200 ]I love TAPS[ / size ] I love TAPSand font : [ font = Verdana ] I love TAPS [ / font ] I love TAPS[ font = Times New Roman ] I love TAPS [ / font ] I love TAPSChanging the colour of your text is really easy - just highlight your message then choose a colour from the drop-down list. Again, functions can be combined : [ size = 20 ][ font = Times New Roman ][ glow = red ,2,300] Isn't technology brilliant?[ / color ][ / glow ][ / font ][ / size ] [glow=red,2,300]Isn't technology brilliant?[/glow]
Hyperlinks, pictures, and videos To link directly to a webpage, all you have to do is copy and paste the URL into your reply box , Proboards should do the rest for you. If for some reason it doesn't work automatically, you can highlight it and click the "hyperlink" button.
To insert a picture, fisrt you need to find its URL. If you're using Photobucket, just copy and paste the Direct Link. If you're using Google Images, click the picture until it appears on screen on its own (usually via the "see full size image" option) and copy the URL from your web browser's address bar.
For all other pics, right click on the picture you want and select select "Properties"
then copy the "Address" or "URL" from the box which appears.
Once you've found the URL, paste it into your reply box and click the "insert image" option.
Advanced bit! You will see that when you insert a picture, the text which appears either side is [ img ] [ / img ] (but without the spaces). You can put this in manually to add pictures to your signature.
To insert a video, use the same method as for a picture - i.e. 1. Find the URL 2. Copy and paste it into your reply box 3. Highlight it 4. Click on the "Youtube Video" button.
On Youtube, the URL is usually in a grey box to the top right of the video you're watching.
(I haven't yet worked out how to make the cheeky oiks remove that ad!!)
And I think that's it! The only functions I haven't mentioned are the ones related to tables (buttons 6, 7, and 8 on the middle row), which frankly are a faff and not that useful, and the "Teletype" and "Insert Code" functions (buttons 11 and 12 on the second row), which I haven't learned how to use yet!
Examples of all text functions below...
Text Samples
bold italic underline
strikethrough [glow=red,2,300]glow[/glow] [shadow=red,left,300]shadow[/shadow]
align left
align centre
align right
horizontal rule font size font size font size font face font face font face font face font face colour
Blockquote indents the text so it stands out. You can use this feature if you want to emphasise a particular paragraph. superscriptsup subscriptsub

Hi Flumps! you're clearly in the wrong job as a teacher of whatever-it is to schoolchildren. You ought to do a book - may I suggest a title? "Computing for Crumblies" ? Cheers! Ma.

Have put some more pics in for the visual learners among you <Ireallyneedtogetoutmoresmiley> If anyone spots any bits that are missing, don't make sense, or would benefit from another picture please let me know and when I get chance I'll do an updated version. It'll be a good in-front-of-the-telly project ;D Maybe when it's done to everyone's satisfaction we could add it to the Shed Guide or get the lovely admin peeps to sticky it somewhere?

A very kind person gave me a link to a page which detailed what to do if you haven't got a mouse (don't get excited Stilton and Sweetpea, I mean a laptop/pc mouse). I have looked everywhere and I can't find the link. If someone can help me - I'd be very grateful - might even bake them a cake!!

You don't need a 'mouse' it means your cursor. I have instead of an arrow a little caveperson who has a spear, she is lovely, can't remember which website I got her from though.
