Do beware of too good to be true offers, they all are!
As you know, Google ads for all sorts of things appear at the top of each board. Some of them give links to other sites. Please be very careful about giving personal details to sites you are not familiar with. The following happened to a member of another message board:
They responded to a Google ad on the messageboard which offered a Free IQ Test but then invited the 'victim' to enter their mobile number in order to have a chance to win £5000. Unfortunately, the member in question entered their mobile number resulting in several premium rate text charges with no means of stopping them.
Scams can pop up anywhere, particularly on the internet. Do please be careful out there folks!

Thanks Piggin - it is always helpful to have a reminder of these scams - my mum was 'drawn into one' - by phone and it took ages to sort it out (and she was several £s lighter!) Thanks for that, Piggin. I once nearly did the same, didn't put no. in though. Thought is was too good to be true. Prize was a new car I think.

Terrible, I never respond to things like that. I guess I'm a bit cautious. I have a funny story, my Mum had an unsolicited call (can't remember exactly but is was something to do with buying wine or share in a vineyard) anyhow the guy had a heavy French accent. Mum twigged that all was not right and proceeded to talk in fluent French. he just hung up!!!! ;D ;D ;D

Just wanted to let everyone know there's a new round of "phishing" going on. I've been emailed by two banks (allegedly) this week, both saying that there's been some suspicious activity on my account, and could I just follow this link and confirm all my security details...
Highly suspicious, not least because I'm not actually a customer of either of the banks in question!
I've forwarded the emails to the relevant people, but it's so easy to fall for this stuff if you're not on the lookout for it.

Hi Flumps, that happened to me. I got an email from Lloyds Bank (supposedly) and was just about to answer when I noticed that the email address was funny, department had been spelt like this, departement, so I phoned Lloyds and told them about it. DO NOT ANSWER THE EMAIL. PHONE the company and tell them.

Alternatively, if you google the name of the bank and "phishing" (e.g. "Natwest phishing") you can usually find the bank's anti-fraud page. Most of them have an email address that you can use to inform them of scams.
I agree wit ASL tho - answering the dodgy email itself is not a good idea, nor is clicking on any link in it.

Oh the whole url isn't working there - anyway what it says, if you can't be bovvered to key it in, is that 24 November - next Monday - is likely to be a big day for viruses , so be extra careful with links and stuff.

I've had loads of these bank emails at work. Mostly from those I don't bank with, and strangely enough they all look exactly the same except for the bank name. I don't bank online anyway, and so have never even bothered to open any of them. There must be enough people that fall for it to make it worth their while Jb

I get a refund every year so I could easily get duped by that one.

Hubby has just told me of a scam going on in several Sainsburys.
You go through the check out and pay by card. you don't want cashback but the cashier puts cashback on and gives it to their "friend" who is behind you in the queue!
I have to admit, I don't pay much attention to my receipts! They collect in the bottom of my handbag then get shredded when I have a turnout! And I'm usually too busy gassing with the cashier to check the amount when I put my PIN in!

If they can do it, so can anyone. DBH always checks his receipts, but I never do. I shall start to now!

Snopes says this one's false, but it's always worth checking your receipt anyway IMO.

And anyway, how would they know you were going to pay by card so that they could be next in the queue? Oh, silly Joany, they'd only queue behind a full trolley - and it's not true anyway so why worry ;D

Norton just blocked a malicious file download request on my computer. It flashed up when I was in the potting shed and I may have accidentally caught at the corner of an advertising banner at the top of the screen. Take care one and all.

Thanks for the reminders, any thing that looks too good to be true usually is! I find it irritating that it is so easy to accidentally click on these links. My son downloaded an add blocker which got rid of most of them on my old computer, but some still got through to aggravate me.
