Yes, I watched it - I tend to watch it when it's someone interesting or it sounds like they have an interesting history. It's the first time I've seen one when they've just looked into one person before! - normally they trace back several generations, sometimes both sides of the family. I suppose finding out about her grandfather was such a big thing for her and the family that they didn't feel a need to go back any further.
Had a long conversation with R about it afterwards - his mum's family was also incredibly poor, but they were in the country and he hadn't realised quite how much worse it would have been for people in a city at that time (at least in the country you have a big garden, you can grow things to eat - also you'd expect to know everyone else in the village and they'd help out if you were really needy). My mum's family were uneducated working class Londoners, so it all sounded quite familiar to me, though I don't think they were quite as badly off - my mum's mum worked in a book-binders so they had a bit of money coming in.

Some of the stories my parents have unearthed have been very sad. On my dad's side there was a black sheep. He married but drank very heavily, they had three boys who they couldn't afford to feed so handed them over to Barnardo's (the mother was very ill). The youngest most handsome son was adopted in this country and had a lovely life in the hub of a caring and loving family. The remaining two were shipped to Canada and were 'adopted'. This basically meant they were worked like dogs on a farm. One boy succombed to beating, overwork and malnutritionand sadly died and his brother ran away and managed to return to England. He was found by a gentleman who took him in and noticed he had a way with horses, he worked in his stables for the rest of his life. But he never went in a house and slept in the stables with the horses and more sadly he never spoke a word to anyone. If anyone came near him he would shake with fear. He never recovered and died aged only 27 with a photo of Walter (his brother) his only possession.
How sad is that? Unbelievable. Barnardo's used to try and hide these stories but now they don't. What was done with good in mind turned round to haunt them.

That is very sad. There must be so many stories like that - but on the other hand, would they have been any better off if they hadn't been taken by Barnardos? - with a sick mother, heavy drinking father, and not enough food, they might well have had lives just as short and miserable My mum has always wanted to trace her Irish roots, but never got the chance, and I think she feels she is too old to start now Maybe I should have a go for her, but I'm not sure I have the time/energy to take up another hobby!

I think lives for the poor where harder than we could ever realise. If the boys had not gone to Banardo's we are sure they would have died, all three were malnourished and starving, riddled with lice and skin complaints. Banardo's sent them to Canada only when they were well enough to go. I believe that they thought they were doing the right thing, history now says that Canada knew what was happening but did nothing. My parents are 70 and they have been doing the tree for a couple of years now. It has been interesting but they really do very little with their time. They shop, visit Sarah and do the family tree. Thats it. It has thrown up some very interesting stuff but its very well hidden amongst lots of boring stuff . Save it 'til winter when you can't get out as much

Don't think so Mavo, its a drama about this
Down-to-earth comedy drama inspired by true stories. Given ground in some Liverpool allotments, troubled refugees meet with mixed reactions from the existing plot holders, who have headaches and heartaches of their own to fret over.

I was wondering what to watch tonight Amazing, I'll give that a go now Hope its good. Actually, I did see something similar to this before, I wonder if its a repeat. It's a film - not been on terrestrial TV before, but you might have seen it at the cinema? - or it's probably been on Sky movies or something. I'm hoping to watch it but need to get a video ready in case R hates it - he's not good with films, he often gets restless and gives up, and I have to watch the ends of them some time when he's not there

My OH is the same Juliet, I am so glad that we can access iplayer so I can watch stuff that he's not keen on. Don't have a video recorder I got rid of it because I can watch stuff on my laptop. I would like to get a usb so we can look at photos etc on the tv. OH complains that screen is not big enough. Earphones would be good as well so we can watch and listen to different things.

Well what did you think of the film then? I thought it was good easy watching, a bit sad, a bit funny and a bit entertaining. Didn't stretch my brain too much, didn't give me nightmares but it did make me think a bit, just a little bit

Taped it and just watched it ... should have been doing other things but feel tired (or maybe I am just a LT). I enjoyed it and agree, Sunny - 'bit sad, bit funny and bit entertaining'. Made me think too!

I watched the film ,too and enjoyed it. When the Doctor was taken away it reminded me of a lady who came to work with us in the garden centre- she mainly did the watering. She was Bulgarian - a very nice lady - and when I got chatting to her she told me that she had been a hand surgeon for over 20 years in Bulgaria but wasn't allowed to do that job here. a lot of knowledge going to waste!

Karen is my favourite too, Lottie. The airport wait was brilliant - poor grandpa! Did you see the Wedding episode - I just couldn't stop laughing! I think they are all good but Karen still steals the show. I read that the children don't have to follow a script but are given the 'plot' etc and are allowed to ad lib. The 'grown-ups' are supposed to use the script but at times find it impossible to follow on - it must be fun to work on!!!

I love outnumbered too, I watched it the first time round.
I stayed up late last night to watch Wallander, the swedish subtitled version. It's fascinating to watch a programme made by other nationalities - even though they used swedish houses in the british kenneth branagh version, it still wasn't the same atmosphere as watching the swediish original.
