Tree Aid - www.treeaid.org.uk/is a small charity which plants trees in poor communities in Africa - the trees provide people with things like food, fuel, medicines, and soap, both for their own families and to sell on and enable them to be self-sufficient. They are asking their supporters to give out leaflets to get them some more publicity - they are worried about losing support at the moment because people aren't feeling sufficiently well-off to give to charities. I don't see people to give leaflets to, so I said I'd post their website on some message boards instead. I called the thread Good Causes rather than Tree Aid, because I thought if anyone else supports any other small, not very well-known charities you could tell us about them too, especially if they are plant/garden related ones, or if they're important to you personally (maybe not the bigger ones which already get loads of publicity though, or the thread will just become a long list!).

That's an interesting charity, I certainly hadn't heard of them before. We support a couple of the bigger charities at work: There is a corner where you can donate books and magazines that you don't want anymore and then others can buy them and we give the money to Macmillan Cancer. The archives manager also buys in Fair Trade goodies (chocolate and biscuits etc) and sells them from the archives department. They have recently started sponsoring a school as well. Both projects seem to be very successful. Mum and dad have been sending goats to Farm Africa for years now (although not black ones as they have a nasty habit of sacrificing them!!!).

I haven't heard of Farm Africa - is it a similar idea to Tree Aid? - providing people with the means to become self-sufficient? Do they have a website?
I realised that what I didn't say in my original post & should have done, is that the idea of the thread is that if anyone on the boards does have a few pounds they want to give to charity, to provide them with some ideas of charities to give to! I'm not very good at the demanding money with menaces (or at least it's mostly with emotional blackmail these days) type of thing that some charities go in for now, but I rather threw the baby out with the bathwater by not mentioning it at all! - hopefully it was obvious.

Yes that's the sort of thing, we give them the best breeding stock from over here for them to develop strong goat herds over there etc www.farmafrica.org.uk/

We are thinking of visiting that Emmaus place now, is it big? How long does it take to get round it? Our hedge-cutter has broken, perhaps they would have a new one, and we could take our old one over for them to fix and sell on.

Doesn't take too long to get around, I guess it depends what you are looking for. I tend to hone in on the books, my dad is a bric a brac addict so he has a nose around for longer. There is a big farm shop (with some plants if I remember) very close by too. Sometimes they have special events/ auctions and days, it's worth keeping an eye open for them.
It may be worth asking them to keep an eye out for a hedge cutter for you.
Rach :-)

While we're on the subject of second-hand stuff, if those of you near enough to Cambridge ever have old furniture or electricals you no longer want, you could offer them to Cambridge SOFA: www.cambridgesofa.co.uk/ They only take electricals which are still working though - I don't think they have anyone to fix broken ones. They are not a charity shop as such (so not open to the public except to receive donations) - they sell items they collect very cheaply to people who are on very low incomes or benefits.

That's awful Amazing - I hope the petition is successful - I'll certainly sign. I have an ex-BF, still a friend, who works full-time as a lifeboatman (he was a volunteer for years first).

I've just got a reply from the government lot, ASL. They say that they reckon the RNLI will only pay about half of what they used to pay under the new system.

Thank you Flumpet That reminds me, has everyone visited Veg Plotting's open garden blog, raising money for Water Aid? If not, it's here: vpopengarden.blogspot.com/The idea is that you take a walk through her garden, the way you would if you visited a private garden open for the NGS, but virtually (bring your own tea & cake - she supplies some recipes for the latter!) - and you make a donation to Water Aid as your admission fee. She is only asking people to give a couple of pounds, but obviously if anyone can afford more, it's a really good cause.

Thankyou for asking Lottie Lily is doing really well - she is taking a few steps unaided but has a long way to go yet. She is gaining confidence and her balance is improving each day In September Lily started at The White Lodge Centre which is close to home www.whitelodgecentre.co.uk/She goes for 2 days a week and goes horse -riding,swimming and gymnastics - all designed to help her mobility. Lily will be going back to Brainwave in the New Year. She also goes to the local playgroup 2 mornings a week which she also loves - she is a very busy little girl We are very, very proud of her ;D ;D ;D

can I put a word in for the RSPCA please? I sometimes get into trouble for championing animal charities when there is so much human misery in the world, but they are facing crisis as people lose jobs and income and either ditch their pets or ask the animal charities to take them in. The safety net provided by the RSCPCA and PDSA for example, helps a lot of people who are struggling with ill health or money worries and have the added anguish of not being able to afford to care for their animals. Thanks
