It occurred to me that many people who join here may not be familiar with what you can do on Proboards. So as I explained elsewhere how to do quotes within your postings, I would start a hints and tips thread for new members.
Here is how to use quotes:
If you want to quote the whole message, click on quote above the message rather than reply, it will quote the message automatically and you can reply beneath the quoted message. If you just want to quote part of a message, copy and paste the bit you want to quote, highlight it and click on the second button in from the right hand side, bottom row, in the pane above your message marked "add tags"
Please feel free to ask questions here and I will do my best to help.

Hope it's OK if I add some tips - a couple of things people have asked about - just to get them all in one place.
When you post on a thread it doesn't automatically add itself to your discussions, so if you want to be able to find it again, tick the box underneath your reply which says "Check this box if you wish to bookmark this thread".
To find your bookmarks again, click on profile (in the grey menu bar at the top), then on bookmarks - this will show you a list of your bookmarks. If there have been new posts on any of these, there will be a button to the left of the title which says "new". Click on this to go to new posts. Alternately, if you click on manage bookmarks (in the dark green menu on your bookmarks page), and scroll down to the bottom of the page, you can choose to receive an email or a pm (personal message) whenever there is a new post on a thread you have bookmarked.
You can also choose to receive an email or have an alert box pop up whenever someone sends you a pm - just click on messages (right at the top of the page), then click on preferences (on the right hand end of the dark green menu bar), and choose the type of notification you want.
If you're following a thread on either board (General or Club House) and haven't bookmarked it, you can see new posts without having to go through the whole thread just by clicking the "new" button to the left of the thread title on the relevant board.
If you want to see all the recent posts to all the threads on both boards, go to the Alternative Potting Shed homepage, and look for the forum statistics (towards the bottom of the page) - there is a link here to the 35 most recent posts on the forum. I find these confusing as you don't see them in the right order or in context, but they might be useful if you are in a hurry.

To re-set the clock on the forum to show British Summer Time:
Click on profile (in the grey menu bar at the top), then click on modify profile. Scroll right down to the bottom of the page and it says "currently observing DST" - select yes & click modify profile (in case anyone is wondering, DST stands for Daylight Saving Time & is the US equivalent of British Summer Time. Apparently.).
In the Autumn you can re-set it to no.

Following the proboards upgrade, all preferences have been re-set to the default. If you want to continue receiving emails/pms, you will need to do what it says in my quote again, I'm afraid! You will also need to choose email/pm for all your current bookmarks individually if you want to continue receiving emails/pms for them.

Hi there Weedy and welcome to TAPS.
To show your avatar, click on profile, then modify profile. Paste the url of your image into the avatar url window then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on modify profile.

To kidnap borrow smileys from elsewhere: Find the smiley you want, on another board or anywhere else you've seen it. Right click on it - a little menu should come up. Select properties - a little box should appear with some information about the smiley. One of the bits of information is its location - this should say something like www.bbc.co.uk/dnaimages/boards/images/emoticons/f_hug.gifCopy this bit (highlight it & then press control C on your keyboard). Open TAPS in another window, go to the thread you want to reply to, and type your message (assuming you haven't done this already). Press control V to paste the location link into your message. Highlight it again, and then click on the little icon which looks like a picture in the row above the TAPS smileys (underneath the crossed-out S). This should turn the link into a picture, like so Preview your message to check it has worked! I'm hoping this works with IE as I use Mozilla. Alternately, you can also save an image on your own computer, upload it to your own Photobucket account and then post it from there using the image code, the way you would one of your photos. I'm not sure how you save things using IE though. This should also work with pictures other than smileys. Bear in mind though that some of these will be copywrited, and some owners of images will be more litigious than others <pinchingimagesfromDisneyisabadideasmiley>

Hi there folks. Hope we are all well. I haven't posted much, but I do lurk a lot, and I'm still looking for a proper avatar. Anyroads, I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me on coldframes. I've been thinking of getting one, but I don't really know if it would do me much good. I don't do much seeds and I don't expect that to change much, but at the same time, if it was easier to do them and start them really early I might be inclined to try some more. I would love to try some meconopsis seeds for example, because they don't seem to sell the seedlings/plug plants much around here. So, given the kind of winter you know we have to deal with - I think just about the same "flavour" as what toonia and Obs have to put up with, perhaps a bit more snow here on average, would I have to find a place indoors for a cold frame? Like how early in the season could I use a coldframe outdoors? I've seen a few neat looking ones at reasonable prices around, but if it's the case where I would still have to have it indoors, and in an area that is out of the way but still gets some light, then that could be a problem. BH has me on a pretty tight quota as far as "gardening stuff" indoors goes. So what could I reasonably expect from a coldframe outdoors?

Hi TT - nice to see you - are you coming to my party?! Sorry I can't help with the coldframe, but I think you are more likely to get answers on the gardening tips thread: thepottingshed.proboards54.com/v45index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=12 or by starting your own thread on the clubhouse board - this one is a technical tips thread to help people use the board! PS Not suggesting you shouldn't go off topic or anything - we've had quite enough of that - just not sure how many people will be reading this thread - most people are on the clubhouse board most of the time.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get this into my avatar. Can somebody help me, please? Hello Jro You need to go to your profile, modify profile then paste the link into the window for your avatar url. Then click modify profile at the bottom of the page. You need the URL not the IMG code from beneath your pic. Let me know if you are still having problems.

Thank you so much, LL. I think I must have been trying to download the wrong page, I had just logged on to have another go and there it was! What a lovely surprise. Every time I pasted the URL it wiped the smiley and left me with a blank. God knows what I was doing. And he certainly wasn't telling.

Did you scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on 'modify profile' again? If you didn't that is probably why it didn't work.

I did click on it. I tried everything I could think of. Obviously not enough though!
I could get DBH to look at what I am doing wrong, but I would like to have another try one day, it's just that I have always liked that photo. It was taken during my 'arty' period with a camera I actually knew how to use! Although how I managed to give an allium red eye I shall never know!

To add a favourite photo as an avatar
You will need to make your pic the right size first. On your selected photo, click on edit, then resize. Click on preset sizes and select avatar. Once you have saved your new settings, copy the second option from beneath your pic "direct link".
Click on "modify profile" then scroll down until you find a window for your avatar. Copy the link marked "direct link" beneath the pic you want from Photobucket and paste it in to the window. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on modify profile.
Don't forget to save when you have entered your link by clicking modify profile at the bottom of the page!

To paste photographs directly into your post
Please resize your photos by following these instructions. On your selected photo, click on edit, then resize. Click on preset sizes and select message board (640 x 480). Once you have saved your new settings, copy the last option from beneath your pic "IMG code".
This prevents the posts becoming too wide to view without sideways scrolling.
Thanks

To add a favourite photo as an avatar You will need to make your pic the right size first. Hi Piggin, it will also work if you just go to modify profile, put in the link for your picture, and type in a size in the boxes which say avatar width & avatar height underneath it - so long as the sizes you type are less than 100, it doesn't matter if the original picture is bigger, Proboards will automatically resize it. You can also change the size of your photos in Photoshop before you've uploaded them to Photobucket if you want to (though I don't know how - I use Gimp rather than Photoshop, but the principle's the same) - I always make sure mine are under 600 each way before uploading them because then I can post links to them as well as pasting them into messages, and it's easier for people who don't have broadband to see them.

Hallo Piggin
My OH set this up for me so that I can chat here which proves to all that I am a total non-starter when it comes to using this machine. Fabdd gave me the tip that my address is visible so how do I remove it? and how do I send messages or are they called private messages? Thanks for your help.

Hi Jollymrsowl - I hope you don't mind me answering in Piggins absence, you have to select 'yes' on the hide email option in your profile. I've done this for you so your addy is now hidden.

Hallo LL Thank you for doing that for me. It's much appreciated. It's taking some time but I'm gradually becoming used to the board. Have just realised that "messages" is what I was looking for yesterday I have hopes that I'll get there in the end. The little grey cells just don't work as quickly as they used to Jolly
